Actionable steps on how to get personal training clients

A weekly operating cadence to generate conversations, consultations, and paid starts.

In this crowded and competitive world of personal training, standing out and attracting clients can feel impossible, but this guide will help you change that.

There is a sea of generic advice promising more clients. The reality is that most tips are repetitive and do not actually move your business forward.

Recognizing this, I have crafted an actionable process that focuses on the work that actually converts.

  • Niche down and define your ideal customer profile (ICP) so you clearly understand who you serve.
  • Build an offer around that ICP so your service is compelling and outcome-driven.
  • Gather qualified leads around your ICP and convert them into loyal, paying clients.

In this article, I step through a complete example. Apply the same logic to whichever niche you want to coach.

Narrow down on a niche: The key to getting personal training clients

Amidst the hustle of personal training, carving out a niche can dramatically improve your ability to attract and retain clients.

To understand how to get personal training clients, start by identifying a group of people whose needs you can solve exceptionally well.

  • Weight loss: Programs that combine training and practical nutrition guidance.
  • Bodybuilding and muscle gain: Coaching for strength progression and hypertrophy.
  • Youth or senior fitness: Age-specific programs with clear safety and progression.
  • Pre and post natal fitness: Support for women during pregnancy and post-partum recovery.
  • Sports performance fitness: Training athletes to improve sport-specific output.
  • Nutrition coaching: Combined training and nutrition systems for better outcomes.

In this example, I choose sports performance fitness and focus specifically on basketball athletes because it aligns with my background.

An Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) sharpens your focus on the segment most likely to benefit from your services.

By understanding the characteristics, needs, and behavior of your ideal customer, you can tailor your marketing, offer design, and client experience to maximize results.

Build your ICP first so every decision in your business has a clear target.

Building an offer around your clients and making it hard to say no

Once the ICP is clear, build your offer directly around that profile. Use your ICP matrix and map each pain point to a practical service component.

Start by breaking your offer into two sections:

  • Core offer
  • Value amplifiers

Core Offer

  • Comprehensive Performance Enhancement Program: A periodized training system for basketball players focused on strength, agility, speed, endurance, and sport-specific skills.
  • Initial Performance Assessment: Use objective testing to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities.
  • Customized Training Plan: Program design based on position, goals, training age, and current constraints.
  • Nutritional Guidance: Sport-specific fueling and recovery recommendations.
  • Mental Toughness and Visualization: Structured routines to improve confidence and execution under pressure.
  • Injury Prevention and Recovery: Corrective and recovery protocols to reduce risk and maintain consistency.

Value Amplifiers

  • 1-on-1 Coaching Sessions: Frequent feedback and progressive program adjustments.
  • Group Clinics and Scrimmages: Tactical sessions where clients apply skills in competitive contexts.
  • Access to Elite Facilities: Higher quality environment and equipment to improve delivery.
  • Wearable Tech and Performance Tracking: Objective progress monitoring and workload management.
  • Unlimited Virtual Consultations: Fast support between sessions to increase adherence.
  • Exclusive Online Content: A member area with videos, resources, and training education.

Gathering the right leads and converting them into loyal paying clients

Now that your offer is clear, gather leads to fill your service. Use the Client Lead Tracker to stay organized and consistent with follow-up.

1. Lead Magnets

Create lead magnets that match your ICP, such as a free guide on basketball shooting drills, a webinar on performance improvement, or a short off-season training series.

2. High-Traffic Platforms

  • Social media: Use Instagram and YouTube to publish educational content and proof of outcomes.
  • Sports forums and communities: Participate in basketball-focused groups and add real value.
  • Local events: Attend or sponsor basketball events to meet qualified prospects face-to-face.

3. Consultation and Conversion

Offer a free consultation or trial session as a low-risk entry point. Use it to assess needs, show your coaching quality, and recommend the right package based on goals and budget.

Keep your consultation personalized. Focus on the client's goals, roadblocks, and motivations, then connect your service directly to those outcomes.

Be ready to handle objections around price and time commitment by emphasizing value, structure, and measurable progress.

To onboard new clients quickly, use this Client Sign-on Contract template.

Then manage onboarding, content delivery, and client communication inside BULK to keep everything in one place.

If you follow this process by defining your ICP, building an irresistible offer, and sourcing leads from the right channels, you will consistently attract better personal training clients.
